ONE LITTLE STAR

This post is a follow-up to yesterday's post about reviews.

It just so happened that on the very day my post about reviews went up, I received ONE LITTLE STAR,  from one little blogger for one little book, Lancaster House.



I believe this further proves my point that not everyone will like every book!

Here's the funny thing:

Lancaster House and The Middle Aisle were included on a Top Ten of 2012 list at House of A La Mode.

This book sucked me in from the very first chapter. Once I got started I literally put it down one time to make dinner for my family. As soon as dinner was over I was back reading! I probably read it in 3 hours, maybe a little more.

I have never read a book quite like this one. I can't begin to describe to you how good it was. When Taylor contacted me and asked if I would be interested in reading and reviewing it here on my blog, the thing that intrigued me the most was the old house. I remember reading a Nora Roberts book a long time ago about a woman (I think) who bought an old house and was restoring it and I really loved that book. So, I was pretty sure that I was going to like this one. This one took me quite by surprise. I wasn't at all prepared for the depth of the paranormal aspect of this story. Just when I thought I had it figured out something else would happen to take the story that much deeper.

One thing is certain, Lancaster House is a main character in this story. There is a little bit in the book about The Winchester House, I remember reading about it or seeing about it on a TV show. I love how the builder of Lancaster House incorporated some of the things he learned on that construction site into the construction of his own home. It gives Lancaster House some very distinctive characteristics.

I don't want to give anything away since this story is so unique. This story is told from two points in time. Zoe is in the present, in a place she doesn't want to be, telling her story to someone else. The story flows really well from one to the other and when she was telling her story I felt like I was right there with her. I was having a hard time not being really angry about what was going on in the present. I was frustrated for her and I just wanted everything to work out.

Zoe is young and energetic and takes this huge house on without a single thought. She walks right in to a house that the Realtor doesn't even want to go into and she sees it in all it's former glory and just knows that it's meant to be hers. She moves in and gets to work without any hesitation. Then odd things start happening, but at first she just chalks it up to exhaustion and things maybe she is just imagining it. One night something happens that she just can't deny and her life changes. She meets a mysterious man who seems to have been watching over her since the moment she walked into Lancaster House.

Zoe spends all her time working on the house and getting to know her mystery man to the point that she isn't even leaving the house at all. She discovers things about him that leave her with more questions than answers and he isn't even telling her everything. She searches out answers by researching the house and it's history, but even this isn't enough.

As the story goes back and forth from past to present, as a reader I was left wondering if she really is crazy! I know one thing is certain, I loved Andre and their love story is so romantic and original. The whole thing is a little reminiscent of random episodes of some of my very favorite paranormal shows. It's a theme that has been played on a handful of them, but I have never read a story with this theme. It's really something else, I know that I keep saying it, but I just can't get it out of my head!

I was NOT happy when it ended, but there is a second book coming out this winter that will hopefully tie it all up nicely. I can't wait to see how Andre and Zoe's story ends. I wholeheartedly recommend this for anyone who likes paranormal books, you will not be disappointed at all. It's not just a good story, it's really well written and just overall a great read.

There are really no content concerns, I don't think there was any profanity. There are some kissing scenes and talk of being intimate, but no detailed love scenes in this one.

I am going to tell you one more time...click on one of those links up there and BUY this book. You will not be disappointed and if you are then I don't think we can be friends anymore! (Just kidding...kind of!!)


Conversely, the ONE LITTLE STAR book reviewer included Lancaster House on her DNF (did not finish) list of 2012!

I said I'd never received an UGLY review, but I do find this review UGLY:

I thought it was a ghost story, but it’s not at all scary. And the ghost isn’t a ghost…or is he? Half of the story was told in Zoe’s POV to the therapist and half was told in Zoe’s POV when she arrives in the house. I was completely bored by the scenes written with the therapist and bummed out that there wasn’t anything scary about the scenes in the house. I think the author tried too hard to make this novel work and it felt more like a spoof novel than the real thing. Since I knew around 50% that I wasn’t suppose to give it a 1 star review for the tour, I stopped reading. I wasn’t going to waste my time finishing it and not review it. - DNF


How's that for different opinions! It's hard to believe they're talking about the same book!

Clearly, she didn't like the book and that's okay. It really is. It's part of being an author and something I have to accept. Everyone is allowed to express their opinion.

Here's what I object to:

This book reviewer was given a free copy of Lancaster House as part of a blog tour. Since I'm paying for positive promotion of my novel, book reviewers agree to  NOT post a review if they can't give the book three stars or more. (this is the policy for this particular book tour company) This policy keeps reviews honest. If you don't like the book, then don't review it. It's as simple as that. I feel this book reviewer broke her agreement by posting this review on her blog and on Goodreads. Just because it's several months later does NOT make it okay.

Okay now I'm done. No more talking about bad reviews. I needed to get that off my chest and now I feel better!

The GOOD, the BAD, and the UGLY!

I'm talking about reviews! One thing every writer needs to know is that not EVERYONE will LOVE every book. It's a hard lesson.

I learned it after writing my second novel. Everyone who read Sierra, my first novel, LOVED it. I was pleasantly surprised. It was such a GOOD feeling, an all time high. I moved on and wrote my next novel, Joshua's Folly. (it will be released next, in March of 2013)

My friends and family eagerly read Joshua's Folly. But this time, the feedback was BAD. 'Not my favorite,' a few people commented. However, there were a select few who LOVED it! To this day, Joshua's Folly is the all time favorite of my mother and my daughter.

Go figure.

I was perplexed. I cried. I may have even sobbed a little.

Then I went back to work, editing and streamlining my novel.

However, I had learned an extremely valuable lesson.

NOT EVERYONE WILL LOVE EVERY SINGLE BOOK I WRITE.

I'm so glad I learned this early on. Sometimes reviews are amazing and they make me happy, floating on cloud nine for days on end. Then a 'not-so-good' review comes my way and I tend to sulk and brood about it for far too long. If I let it get to me, really get to me, it WILL affect my writing because I will lose my confidence.

A bad review does not necessarily mean that I've written a bad book. My books often receive wonderful five-star reviews. Yeah! Happiness!

This sends me a very important message. I've written a good back! People like my writing! WOW!

(Note: If I had never once received a five star review from anyone and no one ever liked any of my books, then the following would be a moot point!)

But then it happens. I get the two or three-star review from someone who did not like my novel at all. (Thank goodness I've never received a downright UGLY review.)

How does this happen? How can one person LOVE it and one person HATE it?

Good question. Thank you for asking.

The answer: NOT EVERY PLOT-LINE APPEALS TO EVERY PERSON.

It's as simple as that. Everyone has different tastes, likes, and dislikes.(Logically, we all know this. Seldom do we apply it to our everyday lives.)

And you know what, that's okay. It really is. It's a healthy perspective and one that keeps me sane as I experience the highs and lows of publishing.

As an example, I will share with you two entirely different reviews about Sierra. I love to post my reviews, but I don't post my bad reviews. Of course not! And I only post this one as an example to prove my point. I don't believe in being ungracious toward reviewers. They have the right to express their opinions. Without book reviewers, I'd be lost! Book reviewers provide a great service to authors. They provide advertisement and promotion.

That being said, here are two reviews of Sierra, one good and one bad. Sierra appealed to one person and it didn't appeal to another. (Out of courtesy to the book reviewer, I won't name who wrote the bad one.)

Three stars:

This was not what I expected with this read. With a rather light touch of the dramatic, most of the story covered a slow and meticulous story that I found less than believable. I actually grew to dislike Alyssa. I found the romance, though sweet, to be unrealistic due to the timing. Alex is a good character, both strong and sweet. Their story is heart-wrenching and sweet and sad all at the same time. Though fairly well written, I couldn't get past the disregard for the recent tragedy that Alyssa seemed to adopt. The plot took on a very raw emotional atmosphere that you don't often come across. An interesting read, but not one I prefer when it comes to sinking into a good romance.

Five stars: From Ruth Hill of My Devotional Thoughts

Let me begin by saying that any review I leave here will never do this book justice. Not since "Hunger Games" has a book so captivated me and taken me on such an emotional roller coaster! I thought I had read romances before, and books like "Jane Eyre" and "A Tale of Two Cities," I had always considered the peaks of romantic literature. Let me say this. This is the most romantic book I have ever read in my 38 years on this planet! In case you have not guessed by now, I loved this book!

When I began this book, I had no idea what I was getting into. I was horrified right off the bat, but I was so intensely drawn into the story that I savored every word on every page. Alyssa and Alex are fantastic characters, and Taylor Dean has made them truly three-dimensional. I connected with both in ways I never dreamed possible that I could connect with fictional characters. Alex gets my award for the most romantic character in a book--right alongside the Dumb as a Box of Rocks Award. No spoilers--read the book yourself.

I found myself tingling in unexpected ways and moaning (even when there were students in the room with me). More than once, I found myself crying over this story, and once I even threw the kindle down on the desk, determined to not finish it. It was too painful to read. Why? Well, let's just say that while I have not experienced anything like Alyssa did, I long for so much of what she and Alex expressed. And the book was so real to me that I found myself longing for what I don't have. Very rarely does a book ever affect me like this. I am a romantic at heart (which the majority of people would never guess), but so far, I can't find anyone who wants to share that romance with me. At least I was able to have some vicarious pleasure with this story.

Let me end by saying there is basically no profanity. No misuse of God's name--always makes me happy. And no sex before marriage. What? Really? What an amazing idea in this day and age! And I am glad the author had the decency to give the characters privacy in the bedroom. In fact, that makes it even more romantic, in my opinion. This book brought out the true romantic in me that often gets neglected.

See what I mean? Two very different reviews. The story in Sierra appealed to one, but not the other. 

This is a concept I think all writers need to learn and remember. There will be TWO star days. But, the FIVE star days come too. 

And they're the BEST!

Lancaster House: THE MOVIE!?

Literature Lovers' Labyrinth:

I give this most endearing book 5 stars, a must read for lovers of the paranormal and of thrilling suspense tales.

Andi's Book Reviews:

Zoe is a very confused and emotionally raw woman. Her doctors have dubbed her as being schizophrenic. While reading the interactions between her and her doctor, you are inclined to agree with them. But as you read her story as she is telling it to her doctor, you start to wonder if she is really telling the truth. All the way through, it is hard to tell what is fact and what is a figment of her imagination.The story is so unbelievable and impossible, yet for her sake you almost want it to be true.

I also loved the descriptions of the Lancaster House. I love the idea of old houses with secret rooms and secret passageways. I would love to visit this house and explore it, ghosts be damned. It's a great setting, again, even if many aspects are just a figment of Zoe's imagination. Somehow, though, I don't think that they are.

To me, this wasn't necessarily a scary read. It was more of a mind-bending tale of intrigue. Reading this reminded me a bit of Girl, Interrupted with the interactions between patient and doctor, and the patient trying to prove that she wasn't crazy. I could see every scene play out like it was on the big screen. I really enjoyed it. There is a sequel to the story, an excerpt of which was at the end of my review copy. I am aching to read it, to figure out some more pieces of Zoe's puzzle.

One of the things I love about these two reviews is that they both mention  that they were able to picture the plot as if it were a movie in their head:

This book is stunningly written with astounding imagery that played like a movie in my mind. 

 I could see every scene play out like it was on the big screen.

I would LOVE to see Lancaster House made into a movie! It would make a fantastic film.

The Cover - This is such an unusual, interesting book cover! It definitely has a vintage vibe about it, which fits perfectly with the story itself. I'm really liking the mix of blues and yellows that have been used, and doesn't that tagline just grab your attention straight away?! Love it.

The Review - Wow. Where to start? Lancaster House was one of the most exhilarating, amazing books I've read all year. Maybe even ever. There is an undercurrent of menace and a totally creepy vibe running through the first half of the novel, one which kept me turning the pages and had my heart beating that little bit faster. From the opening pages, you're sucked right into the action, wondering what is going on and what will happen next.

The house itself is as much of a main character as Zoe. A gorgeously dilapidated 1920 Victorian mansion, Lancaster House is to me, a dream come true! I am desperate to renovate a gem from the past myself, and I love the idea of bringing an old house back to life just like Zoe, so this aspect of the story really appealed to me. I also loved the little connection to the Winchester Mystery House, and the role that this played in the book!

I absolutely adored Zoe and Andre. Without giving too much away, their relationship was so lovely, and both were interesting, unique characters. I enjoyed witnessing the development of their relationship, and I really felt the intensity of their emotions and their feelings for one another. The juxtaposition in Zoe's mannerisms, and the way she could quickly go from being a mature woman who renovates houses for a living, to a young twenty-something racing around a house on piggyback was great! I could relate to her a lot, and throughout the novel I could feel what she was feeling, and this brought me so much deeper into the story. And oh my gosh, Andre! What a dreamboat! He was seriously the perfect man! Well, nearly... He did love throwing guys out of windows a little bit too much for my liking!

I was spellbound by Lancaster House. Ms Dean has really outdone herself with this book. The story was utterly entrancing and completely absorbing. It was also very smart; it kept me thinking and questioning what was going on the entire time, and even after reading it, I'm still not entirely sure what was real and what wasn't. I love a book that keeps me thinking about it well after I'm done reading it.

Lancaster House is definitely one of the best books I've read all year, and I cannot wait for the sequel! So please, write it quickly Ms Dean! In the last few pages I found myself nearly in tears, and I was racing to get to the end. This book has left me reeling, and I can't wait to see what will happen next. 

Oh my! See what I mean?

Now after all that happiness and excitement comes the worry.

*Crash down to earth*

I can't possibly live up to Lancaster House in the sequel. I feel like everyone will be disappointed! How can I possibly make the second book as good as the first? The sequel is an entirely different animal.

"Lancaster House" is not your normal paranormal romance, but a novel with with a well written, interesting plot that is loaded with twists and turns. Lancaster House – wow this novel blew me away. Ha! I initially though Lancaster House was a ghost story – wrong. I had a love and hate relationship with Lancaster House. There were a few things that I didn’t quite well understand BUT there are definitely good things about this novel. Let’s discuss first what I didn’t like -

Andre as a vampire – it wasn’t believable to me. I get why Dean wrote it as it was but I really can’t see Andre as a vampire. But the revelation from my initial though of ghost to vampire was left me speechless. I wasn’t expecting that turn of events.

Zoe was very depended – as in she eventually stopped “living” her life because she was obsessed with Andre. I apologized for using the word obsessed but that’s how Zoe really was resulting to her taking her life because she can’t be without Andre.

Abrupt ending – when it ended I was like “What the heck? What happened?” in a good way. I was so taken by the story that I was taken back by the sudden ending of the story. It left me craving for the next book right there and then.

Well basically these are minor details and it doesn’t really hinder a reader from enjoying the book so it doesn’t really matter. So what’s good about Lancaster House?

The house. There’s really no explanation there since the whole story in my opinion revolves around the house. Andre and Zoe are just secondary compared to how Dean described and highlighted the house in this story. This is also one thing I love about Lancaster House – it was very detailed. I can really picture the house.

Uniqueness. Without giving away much detail I can say that “Lancaster House is not what you perceive it to be. Prepare to be amazed at how different Lancaster House is to your usual reads.

How the story was told. It was like looking into Zoe’s mind since it is based on Zoe’s POV and I thoroughly enjoyed her session with the doctor in charge of her care. It was actually like reading her diary or more like watching a replay of events as it happened. Wade (her doctor) was caring and gentle with Zoe and you can really see his doubt through the sessions. The ending didn’t give any hint if we’ll see the doctor again or not but lets see.

Don’t be fooled by my abrupt ending above since the story was tightly wrapped in the end. You’ll just have this urge to grab a copy to know what happened next. It was a healthy mix of excitement and frustration. Lancaster House is a recommended read. If you haven’t got a copy, grab one now.

The Solitary Bookworm gave Lancaster House four stars, which is still pretty darn amazing considering I'm a brand new, self-published author. I still can't believe people actually LIKE something I wrote. It's entirely surreal!

When I was asked to review this book I was sooo excited! Why? Because the setting of the story is based in my hometown in CALI! Based off the Winchester Mystery House (which is literally blocks from me, and sadly I've never been there. Hmmm, I'm not sure why though. Anyways...) I couldn't resist! Taylor Dean is putting the South Bay on the literary map baby! So without further delay here is my review of Lancaster House.

The book begins with Zoe Grayson telling her story of how she ended up in the "loony bin" as she calls it. From a failed engagement and the devastating loss of her father, Zoe is ready to start fresh. Falling in love with an old Victorian home she decides this is exactly what she needs for a new beginning.

Zoe knows she isn't crazy, but strange things keep happening in her home. Determined to find out whether she's imagining these things or if there's a permanent helpful intruder she searches every nook & crany and hidden room, and that's when she discovers she's not alone...

Lancaster House is an interesting book, it's definitely not your typical paranormal story. I liked that there was a twist in the plot, it kept me engaged in the story. I would have liked to have seen more background into the history of Mrs. Lancaster and what happened to her, I think that would have made the character of Andre more believable. That being said, the story held my interest. I found Lancaster House to be refreshing and interesting. I liked the idea of a new kind of paranormal. The romance between Andre and Zoe was sweet, he was a true gentleman and I enjoyed reading about their time together. The passion that Zoe feels for him is evident and undeniable. It's nice to read a romance novel that can portray passion and desire without revealing "what goes on in the bedroom" so to speak. Don't get me wrong, I like to read that too but this kind of sweet and soft romance was a perfect fit with the characters. The ending was left on a hinge and I WILL be reading the next book to continue on with Zoe and Andre's story.

If you enjoy romance with a touch of paranormal or paranormal with a touch of insanity...read this book.

Nette lives in San Jose, California, where Lancaster House takes place. I grew up in San Jose, California and have many fond memories of my life there. I'll always miss it, but my hubby's job took us off to Texas.

My next book, I Have People, takes place in San Jose, California also. I like to write about the places I know, and I know the Silicon Valley, or at least I used to! It's changed so much since I was last there. Even my parents are no longer there. They retired and moved away. I still have relatives there though, so my ties are not completely broken.

My memories of San Jose have definitely creeped into my writing. It's a great place to live. The weather is NEVER an issue. It's darn near perfect when it comes to climate. Moving away was a bit of a shocker for me. (You mean I actually have to drive in snow???) The best part: the beach is only an hour away!

Texas creeped into my writing too. One of my soon-to-be-released novels, Joshua's Folly, takes place in Texas.

I'm a Texan now, and I love it--but the California Girl is still in my heart.

This is another one of those books that I started and finished in one sitting. I am finding a lot of those lately. Before you have this picture in your head of my kids running around like wild people and laundry and dishes piling up around me while I read, let me tell you that I read at night when my kids are in bed. Now, I may still have laundry and dishes piled up, but it's not because I read too much!!

This was a fantastic story and I will say again that Taylor Dean is a wonderful story teller. There were times during this story that I was in tears, times that I was yelling at Alyssa to run, times that I was on the edge of my seat and times that I was praying for her safety. This story literally goes from one extreme to the other. I don't want to give anything away so I will keep my comments brief.

Alyssa goes from the high of coming home from a great mini vacation with her family to the lowest low in literally a couple hours time. She is taken hostage by two "mountain" men, think Deliverance and you have the right idea. They have bizarre reasons for taking her and forcing her to walk for days in the mountains to where they are building a new life. Just when she thinks that she would rather die than endure another day like this, she is given a chance to start again in the only way that she really can given her circumstances.

I adored Alex from the minute he is introduced into the story. In an attempt to run away from things that have happened in his life he finds himself seeking the solitude that he finds in the mountains. He has created a very simple life for himself and he is completely content with it. That is, until Alyssa walks through his door. In an instant his life is changed.

This story spans the space of a year and there are so many things that happen to each of them. This is a story about love and loss and second chances, but more than that it's about how you can survive even when it seems like all hope is lost. It's a beautiful love story, but it's so much deeper than that. I think this is a story that every woman should read.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good love story. It a story that I would definitely read again! I can't say enough nice things about Taylor Dean and I am looking forward to reading and recommending more of her work.


There are no content concerns in this book really. I don't really remember any profanity and all the love scenes are tastefully done in a fade to next scene kind of way.

It's entirely surreal to read a review from someone who LOVED your book. There's nothing like it in the world!

Lancaster House AMAZING Review!

Okay, I admit, I was feeling pretty down in the dumps last weekend.  My books have not exactly been flying off the shelves. I think I finally faced reality: I'm probably not going to make much money selling books.

Bummer.

My thoughts were all over the place: Guess I could go down to the local Wal-Mart and apply. Perhaps, Burger King? I imagined myself saying, 'would you like fries with that?' My husband and I even discussed joining some ridiculous pyramid scheme to earn a little extra cash. Ugh! No wonder I was depressed. (Not that our finances are bad, I'd just like to pay off our children's college debts sooner than later!)

I LOVE writing books. It's my passion. It's what I want to DO. And you know, making money is not the only thing involved in this process. I put so much of ME in my books. It's like pouring out your heart and soul for all to see. Books not selling is not just business to me, it's personal. Highly personal.

My husband reminded me that my books have only been out for not-even-a month. And I've only just barely begun to advertise.

Oh, yeah.

But then, an amazing thing happened. I received my first real book review. (I mean, not from a family member or friend) I was petrified it was going to be horrible. Surely, they'd see right through me and know I'm not really a writer. They'd know I'm just pretending to be a writer. Just a stay-at-home Mom with an overactive imagination--and she just happened to write it all down in her spare time.

  Wow! What an intense and refreshing book! It pulled me in form the very first page!It has everything from suspense to mystery and yes, of course, romance! This book kept me on edge by keeping me guessing to the very end! Lancaster House is not your same ole paranormal romance that we all have come to know and expect! Oh no! There was no way I could have guessed all the twists and turns that are held in this book! It left me surprised and very satisfied with the the whole story! I guarantee you have never read any other book that is remotely like this one (well at least I sure haven't and I have read a lot of books!)
I really didn't know what I expected before I read it but once I started it, I literally could not put it down until I was at the very last page! I would definitely recommend this book as a must read! And I cannot wait until I get to read the second one in the series!

Suddenly I realized, maybe I will sell a few books. Maybe my dreams are not so far out of reach as I had originally thought. Maybe . . .
