MONDAY MUSINGS

You know what that means, right?
It means, I can spend my time reading books and I'm WORKING.
It's part of my job description!

Ah, if only it were that simple!

Seriously, I learn the most about writing through reading.
Every time I read a book, I learn something new and it always, always improves my own writing.

As I've been working on my newest book, CHASING FIREFLIES,  which takes place in China, I've also learned many new and interesting little tidbits.

For example, the number four to China is just like the number thirteen is to America.
Evidently, the Chinese name for four is similar to the name for death, hence it is considered unlucky.

My daughter spent a semester teaching English in China. She was housed in a very nice apartment building across the street from the school she taught at.
The floors were labeled: 1, 2, 3, 3B, 5, etc.
The Americans, of course, were housed on Floor 3B!!!

The stories my daughter has shared with me about China are finding their way into my new book, lending an air of authenticity.
Fascinating stuff!

The English in China can be quite humorous. Now don't get me wrong, I am impressed that the Chinese make such a huge effort to learn English. Very impressive. I mean no offense toward anyone trying to learn a second language. I can only speak ONE language and I can't imagine how hard it would be to learn Mandarin or any other dialect of Chinese.
I'd get it completely wrong. Every. Time. And I don't doubt they'd be laughing at my attempts.

That being said, sometimes the English used in Asian countries just isn't correct, and it gives me a good giggle.
Like this shirt . . .

When my daughter was in China, the popular shirt to buy was emblazoned with:
YOUR

That's it.

I want one!!

Another example: Here's some cute little pajamas for a young girl:

Oops. Not quite right!!

Hmmm . . . what about all those shirts we Americans buy with Chinese (or Asian) characters on them? Do you think they actually say something that makes sense? Makes you wonder!

When my husband was stationed in Korea, we purchased adorable coats for our daughters. One coat had a tiny picture on one corner of two kids on skateboards. The caption read:
Be careful not to overexert yourself.
It always made us smile. I mean, it's not wrong, it's just not a phrase Americans commonly use.

However, I can't laugh too hard. Like I said, I can't speak two languages. Kudos to all trying to learn English!
It's not easy!

Okay, moving on . . .

Girl of Mine is officially DONE!
It is now with my editor.
I plan to release it in May 2015.

That's all for now!

Have a wonderful Monday!

I HAVE PEOPLE IS FREE FOR FIVE DAYS!

*FREEBIE ALERT*

(On Amazon Kindle only)

Missing any memories?

Holly Sinclair is happily married to the love of her life, Gabriel. Young and in love, Holly hopes to have their first child soon. Of course, Gabriel wants to wait till Holly’s health is restored, much to Holly’s dismay. She feels perfectly fine. So what if she just woke up from an eight-month coma? So what if some of her memories are missing? She remembers Gabe and that’s all that matters, right?

That is, until HE enters her life again . . . she forgot about HIM.

I Have People deals with domestic abuse. While it is a warmhearted romance novel in parts, some scenes are a bit intense. One of the issues I attempted to touch on is the oft-asked question:

When exactly does a perpetrator’s behavior constitute abuse?

Image courtesy of [smarnad] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Unfortunately, it’s not an easy question to answer. Why? Because the legal answer will be different from the logical answer.

Let’s go with logic.

While writing I Have People, I visited with a lady who had endured an abusive situation. Her ex-husband never hit her. Not once. BUT, the implied threat was always there. While her husband threw a temper tantrum and destroyed a throw pillow with his bare hands in a fit of anger, she said that this thought was always in the back of her mind: “Will that be me one day?”

A chilling thought. Mental and verbal abuse are just as real as physical abuse.

If any physical harm is implied or threatened, make no mistake, it IS abuse. Even if the perpetrator never once touches his victim.

No one should have to live in fear. Can you prosecute for this type of abuse? Nope. You can try, but the odds are against you.

But you can and should free yourself. Protect yourself.

My hope is that I Have People will help women to realize this. And maybe it will help one woman to escape her unhappy situation. Even if it’s just one—I will have succeeded.

Below is a short excerpt from I Have People wherein the main character, Holly, faces this very issue:

Cal took a few days off to solicitously take care of her. He was attentive and sympathetic, ridiculously so.  She called her work to let them know she was very ill and needed to take the week off.  While she lay in bed, waiting for her body to heal, she pondered over her life.
It was a mistake to marry Cal, she knew that with certainty. Her love for him was dying a slow and painful death. He could be so wonderful one minute, but once something set off his temper, he turned into an entirely different man. The crux of the problem was not just that Cal had a temper, but that when he lost it, he was capable of turning violent—he was capable of turning on her, of hurting her. The thing was, he’d never really hit her. He was rough, he liked to use physical force to intimidate her, but was he really abusive? After all, he hadn’t meant for her to fall onto the glass table. How far does he have to go before his behavior is labeled as abusive? Was she wrong to even use the word when considering his actions?
She didn’t know. She was baffled and in pain. She couldn’t think logically. Should she have reported Cal? He’d been angry and he’d been pushing her around, but he hadn’t meant to hurt her. He’d apologized, he was taking care of her, and he loved her. Where did that leave her?
Confused and unsure, that’s where. Completely perplexed. Did he love her or didn’t he?

MONDAY MUSINGS: SOLDIERS COMING HOME

Soldiers coming home is a moving and touching sight to see.
I found this video on You Tube and bawled like a baby while watching it.

TAKE THE CHALLENGE AND TRY NOT TO CRY HAPPY TEARS!

My hubby was in the Army and has been gone twice for long periods of time. Once he was gone for three months in Korea. We would've been separated for a year, but he was able to make arrangements for us to join him in Korea.

The second time he was gone for 14 months to Iraq.

In Girl of Mine, Luke comes home while traveling with other soldiers. A news crew is there to record the precious moment. While the news crew is filming and interviewing the other soldiers and their families, Luke and Jill sneak away and avoid being interviewed by the news.
In the broadcast that evening, the other soldiers and their families are featured in a touching segment. As the screen goes black, the newscaster says, "And Lucas Graham came home too."

Awkward at best, right?

This is a TRUE story. This happened when my hubby came home from Iraq. We grabbed our chance to sneak away, not wanting to be on public display during a very emotional moment.
Later, some friends told us about the newscast. As the screen went black, they announced my hubby's name.

It always gives us a good giggle and I couldn't help including this story in GIRL OF MINE.

Although this story is not specifically about the war, I give special thanks to my hubby for his invaluable knowledge of the war in Iraq and the enlightening stories he was able to come home and share with me. And now you have the privilege of hearing a few of those stories in GIRL OF MINE.

Just a few though, because, well, that would be another entire book altogether—and this is a romance novel.

Most of all, hubby, thank you for coming home.

MONDAY MUSINGS

Is it Monday already? How'd that happen?

I spent the week in Albuquerque. While my hubby taught a class, I sat in the hotel room and worked on my next book, CHASING FIREFLIES. (working title)

Out for a birthday lunch at CPK.

I also turned a year older. Up until late the night before my birthday I thought I was turning 53.
Nope, I just turned 52.
How's that for old? I couldn't even remember my age.
This does not bode well for me!!

I can tell you the age of each one of my characters--evidently just not my own age!

Where are my priorities?

My new book, CHASING FIREFLIES, takes place in China!
My daughter spent a semester abroad teaching English in Zhongshan, China, so I have the perfect subject matter expert to advise me.

Just like my daughter, the heroine of the story will travel to China to teach English for a semester--and from there the adventure will begin!

My daughter felt China was a magical place and loved her time there.

Hopefully I can capture some of that magic in my new book!

I still have all of my daughter's emails from her trip to China and they are a wealth of information.

I haven't forgotten about GIRL OF MINE. I'm still waiting on the responses from all of my beta readers. I hate to ask them to HURRY when they are doing me a huge favor.
Hence, I must be patient.
Just know, it is COMING SOON!

Have a great Monday!

MONDAY MUSINGS

I am soooooo ready for Winter to be OVER!
Snow days make me feel claustrophobic.

Image courtesy of [kantapat] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Even though I'm a homebody and I'm always at my computer working, the snow outside makes me feel trapped in my home, as if the choice to leave and go somewhere has been taken from me.

Here's the view from my front and back door earlier this week:

I'm a warm weather gal and I'm ready for Spring!

Meanwhile, beta reading for GIRL OF MINE is still in the works, but the feedback thus far has been great!

While I'm waiting, I've begun work on my next novel, currently entitled,
CHASING FIREFLIES.

It will be released in July of 2016 as part of a series I'm doing with eleven other authors. One book will be released a month.
Each stand alone story will include one common character.
The character will be introduced in a free novella in
January of 2016.

It is entitled:
THE POWER OF THE MATCHMAKER

The participating authors:
Amy Harmon
Karey White
Rachael Anderson
Heather B. Moore
Julie Wright
Heidi Ashworth
Taylor Dean
Michele Paige Holmes
Janette Rallison
Regina Sirois
Sharalyn Pratt
Jaima Fixen

I feel very honored to have been invited to participate in a series with these wonderful authors.

No pressure to be amazing or anything.

Hopefully I can write a diamond!

Have a wonderful Monday, everyone!

And stay warm!
