Holly Sinclair is happily married to the love of her life, Gabriel. Young and in love, Holly hopes to have their first child soon. Of course, Gabriel wants to wait till Holly’s health is restored, much to Holly’s dismay. She feels perfectly fine. So what if she just woke up from an eight-month coma? So what if some of her memories are missing? She remembers Gabe and that’s all that matters, right?

That is, until HE enters her life again . . . she forgot about HIM.

BTW, I'll be busy for the next little while, spending time with the newest man in my life! (All 6 lbs. 5 oz. of him) Love being a Grandma!

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY

Wordless Wednesday is actually filled with words--the words, thoughts, and feelings that pictures or images evoke within each of us without uttering a single word!

What WORD/WORDS does this picture evoke within you?

I'll start: This image reminds me that love is all around us, we just have to look for it, notice it, realize it. So, I call it, "Looking for Love."

INSPIRATION

I love dance. Combine a romantic dance with a touching song and I am inspired.

Here are three dances (and songs) that have inspired my writing lately.

This is my favorite performance from this last week on So You Think You Can Dance.

This is the winning performance from the last season of Dancing with the Stars. This song is greatly inspiring my next novel.
(the very first brief performance is not it! Keep watching!)

I've shared the next dance before. I LOVE the emotion in this performance. If I can capture this angst in my next novel, I will have succeeded.

THE WEEKEND--NEED ADVICE!

Since I did absolutely nothing newsworthy this weekend, I'd like to ask for some advice from my readers.

I've asked for advice on this subject in the past, and I hate to beat a dead horse, but I would appreciate your honest opinion.

When I first published, I made the choice to go with illustrated covers. I love my book covers, I really do.

However, recently For Nick was placed on a Goodreads list entitled, "Favorite Children's Books."

Ugh. I had to message Goodreads and have it removed, letting them know that it was a contemporary romance novel.

AND I was recently rejected by Book Bub (an ebook advertising site) for I Have People. (They accepted Lancaster House) I Have People has 18 five-star and four four-star reviews on Amazon. And only one three-star review. I would venture to guess that the reason is the cover. It doesn't look like a contemporary romance novel.

These two experiences have made me wonder if I should rethink my covers. Do people glance at them and think they are children's books?

I don't want to change my covers. I love them. But I do wonder if sales would improve if I changed the covers. (sales are the best they've ever been right now--but they could also be a lot better!) Self-publishing is an uphill battle and in order to succeed, books need to have the right cover!

I'm 48,000 words in to my next novel, entitled, I'm With You. This image--taken from istock and unpurchased as of yet--goes perfectly with the novel, and with my other covers, and I love it. But, I'm hesitant and unsure which way to go. (It's also very similar to For Nick) A woman standing alone, holding balloons, is extremely significant to the novel. But without that knowledge, perhaps it just looks like a children's book.

I'm considering going with something like this:

Any advice?

Do you think I should leave my covers as they are, or go for a more traditional look?

Thank you for your help!

THE WEEKEND

This weekend we celebrated my hubby's birthday, hence we had a lazy, relaxing weekend. We spent Saturday morning sitting in our shady backyard, enjoying brunch and reading.

I've been reading a lot lately. I learn the most about writing simply from reading. I love to see how different authors execute a scene, world build, construct dialogue, craft sentences, build suspense, handle POV, etc. etc. It's fascinating to me and I love to support other authors.

I'm hard at work on my newest novel, I'm With You. Current word count: 35,000. I know one writer who writes 10k a DAY! Wow! Impressive. Not me. I'm happy if I complete 10K a week, as a matter of fact, that's my goal. I tend to write, then go back and read it over, get the feel of the novel, then move forward and write more, then go back and re-read and tweak, etc. It's a slow process. But that's what works for me.

If you've read Joshua's Folly, here's a little tidbit you might be interested in: the play Josh and Marisa go see is a real play, really performed nightly during the summer in Palo Duro Canyon, located about twenty minutes outside of Amarillo, Texas. To see a short video go here: http://www.texas-show.com/

I LOVE this play! Can I say it one more time? I LOVE it! We go see it every summer and I never get tired of it. It is an outdoor play and the walls of the canyon are the walls of the theater. It is amazing! And I loved sneaking it into one of my books!

BTW, they don't just use the stage, all of that land behind the stage, it's all used during the course of the performance! The play includes dancing, singing, romance, incredible horsemanship, and amazing special effects!

Check out this you tube video for snippets of the play:
(watch it all if you want to see the horses!)

THE WEEKEND

My weekend took an unexpected turn.

Let's start with Thursday night.

I helped to host a bridal shower for a good friend of mine who is getting married for the first time at the age of 50! I'm so happy for her.

It was a baseball themed shower. Her and her fiance wore baseball shirts in their wedding invitation picture. The invitation says, "Let's team up for eternity."
Too cute.

Then Friday morning rolled around. Here's where my weekend took an unexpected turn. I woke up to the stomach flu--and I'm not talking about a minor tummy ache. Ugh. Not fun.

I've been lying around all weekend, getting absolutely nothing done.
While I moaned, my  hubby put together the brand new crib and changing table for my new "Grandma's Grandbaby Room." The room isn't finished yet, but here's how it looks so far:

Okay, I admit, I got up and put together the bedding. Maybe I did get something done.

Now I just need my grandbabies to visit!

Book news: I'm 26,000 words into my next novel. Moving slowly, but it's coming along nicely.

I also feel as though I learned a great lesson on Thursday afternoon. I received some fairly harsh reviews on Amazon for two of my books, Joshua's Folly and For Nick. My first reaction was tears. I felt the reviewer was mean and spiteful. And she was.

Very upset, I reached out to my family. My sister called me and said, "Why do you write?" (not even a hello) At this point, I was sobbing and couldn't really speak. She repeated, "Why do you write?" Finally I answered her. "Because I love it." She replied, "Exactly. Not everyone will like every book. Get over it."

It was just what I needed to hear. For Nick currently has 22 five-star reviews, 3 four-star reviews, and 2 three-star harsh reviews. It was time to put things into perspective.

But, this experience made me think. Was this reviewer rather harsh? Yes. However, she was stating her opinion. And that is, after all, what a review is. Is there a fine line between stating your opinion and just being mean?

I believe there is a nice way to say you didn't care for a book.

Yet, people are allowed to state their opinions too.

As authors, we have to sit back and take it.

Food for thought: I sometimes wonder if people ever stop and think about how much time and effort an author puts into a book. I spend several months--sometimes as long as a year--working every day on one book. I spend countless hours editing. I started writing in 2006. I published my six books in 2012-2013.
That's how long it took me to feel they were ready to be published. A book is not something I whip up in an afternoon and casually present to the public for their reading pleasure.
Yet, a reviewer can tear your book apart in three sentences.
Yikes.
That's the business I'm in, though.
And it's just the way it is.

While I can now look upon bad reviews with a little bit of a different perspective, they still hurt. A lot.

The trick is to not let bad reviews get into your head. I read the good reviews to build myself up and then keep on doing what I love.

Write!

I'd love to hear what you think about this issue!

THE WEEKEND

Honestly, the highlight of my weekend was a wonderful post about MY books on a fabulous book review site called, FUNDINMENTAL. To see the post, go here.

I especially love the perfect picture of all of my books in the post. It's something I haven't even done as of yet! So, thank you, Sherry, for the lovely picture.

There's something about seeing a picture of all of my books together that sends a thrill through me! So satisfying. It makes me feel like I've accomplished something, that all of my work has not been in vain. Even so, I've enjoyed every minute of writing these books. It's a bonus when other people love them too!

My weekend was spent running an Eleven Year Old Boy Scout Day Camp. I took lots of pictures, but then realized that I couldn't really post them on my blog. Not when young children are involved. I believe I would need parental permission, so decided not to post the pictures.

At any rate, as we drove home from the Day Camp, hot, sweaty, and exhausted, we saw one of those digital bank signs that tells what the temperature outside is and it read 102. At five 'o clock at night.

Let's just say, it's now Sunday morning (as I write this) at 11:30 AM and I just woke up and I'm still in my pajamas and my feet are still throbbing. Seriously, I'm staying off my feet as much as possible today. However, the Day Camp was a success and a good time was had by all. (even me)

The best part: it's over. Thank goodness.

And, to my hubby of 31 years as of today,
Happy Anniversary!

Speaking of accomplishments . . .
(and anyone who has raised children knows it's an accomplishment!!)

(Pic from May of 2012. Three other grandsons not pictured! One born in June 2013, one, sadly, in heaven--see my blog post, Remembering Jerad--and one more on the way in September 2013!)

Of anything, my family has brought me the most happiness!
