THE WEEKEND

It was an exciting weekend!

I did my very first book signing at the local Hastings Bookstore!

The secret to a successful book signing:
free cupcakes and bookmarks!

And I also offered a free fabric gift bag with purchase.

All of these things helped me to interact with customers without feeling like I was being pushy. I'm NOT a good salesperson!

It was also very exciting to see my books on the bookstore shelf! (on consignment at the local Hastings, only)

Also, we finished covering our old wall paper border! I've been promising I would share how we did it, so here it is:

We used peel and stick floor tiles!
We found some floor tiles that were made to look like brown leather. They were 12 x 12. We cut one end to make the squares 12 x 9. Otherwise they would have been too long when it came to the door frames. Then we peeled off the backing and placed them on the wall. It was that easy!
Just to be sure they would stay in place, we hammered small brown nails in each corner of the tiles. You can hardly see them unless you are up close and the light is directly on them--and even then, they look great!
We LOVE it!
Voila! A quick easy way to cover your old wall paper border!

We found a mirror that is covered with faux leather to match our new border.
We call it our portal to Lancaster House!!

A few have asked how we cut the tiles, to make them look uniform.
My hubby nailed three small boards onto a large flat board, to form a perfect square. This held the tile in place while cutting. He used a metal square to make a straight cut. He used a cardboard cutter to actually make the cut.

How was your weekend?
I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day!

  1. Congratulations on your first signing!! The cupcake trick would have worked on me!

I really like the new look of the bedroom. I have a room that could use an update like this. What did you use to cut the tiles so they were uniform in size?

    1. Hi Kim! Yeah, cupcakes always have me at hello too!

I've added one more picture to the post, just for you! It shows how we cut the tiles. We thought we'd be cutting tiles all day, but the entire job, to include cutting the tiles, only took about four hours. It was much faster and easier than we thought it would be! Good luck! I hope it works for you! If you have any more questions, I'll be happy to answer them!

  2. Congrats on the book signing. The cupcakes look really yummy.

Awesome job on the border. That is a cool solution to a yucky problem. I have removed wallpaper and border. It's not too bad, but I love your solution. It looks great.

    1. Hi Sherry! Thanks, I'm glad you like my new border! The old border was applied directly onto the sheetrock, with no primer or paint underneath. VERY hard to remove. Several people said you can easily just texture and paint right over the old wallpaper border. But we liked the idea of the tiles the best. The room is very GREEN and needed that extra layer of brown. Thanks for your input. Always love hearing from you!

    1. Sounds like a wonderful Mother's Day, Linda! I had a good day too. I spoke with my children and my Mom on the phone--and my hubby pampered me! Couldn't ask for more!
I'm glad you like our bedroom! It's finally complete, except for a few minor things here and there. I'm pleased with how it turned out. The decor went from eighties to updated! I'd never thought of doing chocolate brown with hunter green, but I love it! Thanks for your comment!

  5. Congratulations on your successful book signing. Must have been very exciting and wish I could have been there! You books look right at home on that bookshelf:)

Very creative solution on the border. I never would have thought of using tiles. Might need to do something like that for my sons room. His border is so too young now.

    1. Thanks, Laura! It's a dream come true to actually see my books on a bookshelf in an actual store! It's been a long road! But worth all of the effort.

My son's border in his room is still a space border. He's away at college now. We should have changed it years ago! So, I know what you mean about the border being too young. The years go by and we get busy! Hope the tile idea works for you!
