MONDAY MUSINGS

Do you ever feel like casting your fears aside and just going for something?
Yeah, me too.
So I did.

I've always wanted my hair to be like Sandra Bullock's hair in Demolition Man.
I've talked about it for years.
Don't ask me why, it was just an obsession of mine.

There's just one problem . . . I don't look like Sandra Bullock, and I don't have her amazing hair either!

But I did it anyway.

Hmmm . . . one of these things is not like the other!

I'll post a better picture when I have one!

Have a great Monday everyone!

MONDAY MUSINGS

I'M WITH YOU is now back from the editor and I've been spending every spare moment polishing my manuscript.
Release date is March 30, 2014.

Sadly, I discovered that this image has been used as a book cover already.

17796110

I still love it though. The coloring on my book cover is very different. So I'm keeping it!

SIERRA is also undergoing a good editing. A few mistakes were kindly brought to my attention and now I cringe every time I sell a copy of this book. I hate mistakes and I want them fixed yesterday! The story line will not change, the manuscript will simply undergo a bit of a polishing.
(Just for the record, I do know the difference between vain/vein and bear/bare. Unforgivable mistakes that I didn't catch!)
While I'm at it, I have decided to add the UNPUBLISHED EPILOGUE to the novel.
When I published SIERRA I was worried about the word count. The epilogue is 5,000 words. SIERRA is a 100,000 word novel. If someone is willing to invest their time into this novel, they deserve an epilogue! What's 5,000  more words when you've already read 100,000 words?
I've also noticed that some readers feel the novel ends too abruptly. Hopefully, the epilogue will provide some needed closure and give readers a more satisfying ending. While the epilogue is not crucial--or even necessary--to the story, I enjoy the glimpse into Alex and Alyssa's life.
The UNPUBLISHED EPILOGUE has previously been posted on my blog. You can read it here.

Did you know my inspiration for SIERRA came from a TRUE story?
I received my inspiration for Sierra from the true story of the abduction of Olympic medalist, Kari Swenson. As I watched the 1987 TV movie of her ordeal (Abduction, 1987 by Vidmark Entertainment) it sparked a "what if" story in me. What if the kidnapping had been successful? What if she was taken deep into the woods? What if she was rescued there? What if she had to stay with her rescuer through the winter?

Here's the story of Kari Swenson, taken from Wikipedia:

On 15 July 1984, Swenson was abducted near Big Sky, Montana during a training run on her favorite cross-country route. She was held captive for over 18 hours, most of it spent chained to a tree. A search party was organized when she was overdue.

Swenson had been abducted by father and son pair Don and Dan Nichols, two experienced survivalists who had designs to make Swenson the son's bride and start a family in the mountains. A friend of hers, Alan Goldstein, accidentally stumbled onto the Nichols camp and was killed by Don Nichols, and Swenson was shot through a lung by Dan Nichols. Spooked by the turn of events, the two Nichols abandoned their camp, leaving Swenson chained to a tree. She sat alone with her dead friend for over four hours before being discovered by the posse.

The Nicholses evaded capture until December, 1984. Both men were eventually tried separately in Virginia City by prosecutor Marc Racicot. In May 1985, Dan Nichols was sentenced to 20 years for kidnapping and misdemeanor assault. In September 1985, Don Nichols was sentenced to 85 years for kidnapping, murder, and aggravated assault and remains in prison. Dan Nichols was released on parole in 1991. Dan Nichols was again in trouble with the law in 2011 when he was allegedly caught with marijuana that he intended to sell at a concert. In May 2012, Dan Nichols was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.

Swenson completed physical rehabilitation in time to compete in the world championships, winning a bronze medal, despite having only 80% lung capacity.

When people say SIERRA is unrealistic, I think to myself, just ask Kari Swenson. She'll set you straight!

As most of you know, JOSHUA'S FOLLY is different from my other novels.
One reviewer even called it Taylor's Folly.
Yikes.
She also called the plot preposterous.
Ouch.
People have asked me, "What was your motivation for writing this novel?"
Good question. The answer is personal.
When my father was only three years old, his father took him for a drive--a drive that my father still remembers to this day. During this ill-fated drive, his father announced to him that he was leaving and he wasn't coming back.
My father's parents were divorcing.
His father moved to Kansas and my father never heard from him again, not once. Not a card on his birthday, not a phone call, NOTHING. EVER AGAIN.
This has greatly affected my father throughout his life. I can't imagine how such an experience would make you feel. Your parents are supposed to be the people who love you the most in this world. What kind of insecurities must it create when you are denied that love?
In JOSHUA'S FOLLY, I wanted to explore the affects of childhood trauma on our adult lives.
The story hits close to home and that's why I wrote it.
Some people like it, and some don't.
And that's okay.

A little back-story . . .
An agent worked with me on this novel, making it into a contemporary novel.
It used to include a story of child abuse, attempted assault, and kidnapping.
Too much? Maybe.
But sometimes I wonder if I should've left those plot elements in the book! It certainly would've been more exciting!
Ah, hindsight.
The agent wanted me to remove the wedding at the end and have Josh and Marisa "make love earlier in the story."
I wasn't comfortable with that.
He was very polite when I told him I didn't want to do that and said he didn't want me to write anything that I wasn't comfortable with. But, he also said there was nothing more he could do for me and we ended our contract.
That was a tough day for me, but I couldn't go against my beliefs--and I don't want to write about pre-marital sex.

At the same time, not everyone considers my novels to be Clean Romance.
Go figure.

So . . . these are my thoughts on a sunny Monday in February.

What are you thinking about today?

MONDAY MUSINGS -- BOOK TRAILER OF I'M WITH YOU

I spent my weekend working on my Book Trailer for
 I'M WITH YOU.

So, here it is for your viewing pleasure . . .

Feel free to share!

View the trailer on YouTube here:

And if you feel so inclined, give it a like and leave a comment. I would be most appreciative!

The release date for I'M WITH YOU is March 30th, 2014.

What do you think of book trailers?

My daughters all said they thought book trailers were . . . well, dumb. They said they'd  never seen one that they loved or that made them rush out and buy the book.

They liked the book trailer for I'M WITH YOU. They just don't enjoy book trailers as a whole.

I debated over whether to do one or not.

In the end, I felt there were enough people out there who do enjoy them and expect you to have a book trailer to accompany your new release.

Besides, I'm one of those people who does enjoy them.

What about you?
Do you like book trailers?

MONDAY MUSINGS

It's been an exciting weekend. I offered FOR NICK for free on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I was completely unprepared for the results!
As of right now (Sunday afternoon), here are the stats:

On Amazon.com:

On Amazon UK:

On Saturday afternoon, I received an email from eBook Daily.com. They chose to feature FOR NICK on Saturday. Wow! So awesome!

Total downloads as of Sunday afternoon (4 PM):

11,923!!!!

The best part has been the reviews thus far.

Amazon.com:

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredibly emotional book, NOT your run of the mill romance! February 1, 2014

First of all, I have always been like Andie, seldom crying, NEVER crying over a book. Until tonight. Or this morning since it is now 4 a.m.

First of all, to anyone who dares to criticize that the writing is stilted or predictable, show your credentials. I have a JD (requires good writing) and a BA in Journalism. The writing was not stilted. It was not meant to be a literary masterpiece, but this was a well-written book. Yes, I guessed who the mysterious "Nick" was; but that is all I got correct.

*SPOILER ALERT WARNING*

I loved the easy romance Andie and Zack found themselves in from the get-go; I hated how he Zack treated her when he believed the worst in her; I fell apart (with actual tears) when Zack fell in love with Nick as much as Andie did and when Nick left, but 10 pages later I was snorting with laughter over Zack's total spaz about hospitals and even how to get to one.

In short, this was not your trite romance, thank God, and I loved it. Now I have to go buy the rest of the author's books. Thank you, Ms. Dean. (I still refuse to watch The Notebook, Marley and Me, and any other potentially sad movies, though!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the book! Great Love Story. February 2, 2014

I love this book! I could not put it down, because of this book I am now on my way to finding all books written by Taylor Dean.

I love the characters, Nick was so sweet, smart person.
I am in love with Andie and Zach's love story. The way they fell in love and their love story. This has become one of my favorite Romance novel, I'm glad I gave this book a try. I really can't say much without spoiling the book. So all I can say is read it, it is worth the your time and you will love it. If you are looking for Romantic book, this is it. It will make you laugh, love, cry and everything else you can feel. LOVE IT!

Amazon UK:

5.0 out of 5 stars Would highly recommend, 2 Feb 2014
Absolutely loved this book.
Laughed and cried. Couldn't put it down and read in one sitting. What are you waiting for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Best I've read in a long time, 2 Feb 2014
Heart warming and heartbreaking, had me in tears, lovely story, recommend to all who love a nice love story with a twist.

Perhaps you're wondering why it is beneficial to authors to occasionally offer their books for free.

I mean, after months of hard work, writing and editing, and agonizing over every last word, why on earth would an author give away his/her book for free?

Good question.

Let me explain.
(Otherwise known as things I wished I had known when I first published!)

First of all, advertising is very expensive. Authors have many different choices at their disposal, however.

One is the blog tour. When an author embarks upon a blog tour, their book is well advertised. But, the amount of readers who actually purchase the book can be low. As a matter of fact, if there is a giveaway included during the blog tour, many readers will wait to purchase the book to see if they won or not first! Don't get me wrong, blog tours and blasts are a wonderful way to advertise and I will absolutely continue to do them. I was able to gain a small following through blog tours, and amp up my social media numbers as well. For me, it did not garner high sales results, however. Sales, yes. High sales, no. This will vary from author to author, of course. I was completely unknown when I first published and blog tours definitely got me started.

There are other options. One is advertising on Book Bub. It was the best thing I ever did. Book Bub offers to advertise your book to thousands of readers through a daily email. You have the choice of offering your book at a reduced rate or of offering it for free. They are a bit pricey, but it was the first time I ever received massive amounts of downloads! It kick-started my sales and they've never slowed down since. (Keep in mind, success is relative. My success could be considered another person's failure. If I sale 10-20 books per day, I am thrilled! It's all relative and depends on what you are looking for out of this endeavor.) Another drawback to Book Bub is that they are very careful about which books they will advertise. Your book must be approved by their editorial team. Hence, not everyone can advertise through them.

That being said, choosing to offer a book for free as part of your advertising efforts gets your book directly into readers' hands--at no cost to the author and no cost to the reader. If your book is exclusive to Amazon Kindle (KDP), you are allowed to make your book free for five days per every 90 day period. You simply schedule it and they do all the work for you. This is free. There is no cost to the author. (I believe they must advertise the free books in their 'Daily Deals' email. I woke up on Friday morning to 400 downloads of FOR NICK and I hadn't even begun to advertise. Not sure about that though. Anyone know?)

Now here's the kicker: When you receive massive amounts of downloads of your book in one day, the odds are with you that it will appear on Amazon's Top 100 Free list, (or Top 100 Paid list, if you offer your book for a reduced amount). Once your book makes a Top 100 list, it is visible to many, many readers who check the lists on a daily basis--readers who would otherwise never hear about your book. This is a huge benefit.

Lastly, if a reader enjoys your free book, most likely they will take a chance on some of your other books.

I can't think of a better way to advertise than to give nearly 12,000 readers an opportunity to read one of my books and see if they like it! Hopefully they will come back for more! It's a win-win. The reader didn't have to spend their hard earned money to take a chance on a new author. And, hopefully, I will have gained some new fans!

So, this turned out to be a really long blog post. If you're still reading this, thank you!

Have a wonderful Monday!
